The story of Les Miserables
After nearly 20 years working on the chain gang Jean Valjean is finally released on parole only to find that the yellow ticket he is required by law to display marks him as an outcast, an undesirable not to be trusted. As Valjean struggles to make his way in his new life he encounters the Bishop of Digne who gives him a chance to start again. Police Inspector Javert cannot let this man slip away, he is determined to bring Valjean to justice. As Valjean leads a new life under a new name Javert is constantly looming around the corner and in the meantime revolution is in the air of Paris.

Les Miserables announces full-fledged West End return plans plus on-sale date
Plans have been announced for Les Miserables to recommence performances this summer in all the show's former revolutionary glory without social distancing measures. The announcement comes after the vaccine is now being administered to the UK's higher-risk population, including Sir Ian McKellen, who received his first of two doses of the Pfizer vaccine on 16 March 2020.

England theatres can re-open on 2 December if in tiers 1 and 2
New rules have been announced for England's tier system, which is intended to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Theatres located in areas falling under tiers 1 and 2 will be permitted to re-open albeit with more stringent restrictions whilst venues placed under tier 3 will remain closed. Replacement Matt Lucas drops out of Les Mis after back injury
Matt Lucas has been forced to withdraw from the West End production of Les Miserables after injuring his back. The comedian was meant to be a temporary replacement for Gerard Carey, who was also forced to prematurely leave the production in order to avoid chronic vocal damage. Carey is currently on vocal rest until 3 February at the recommendation of his doctor.

Stephen Sondheim falls at his home; lunchtime opening event to be delayed
The Sondheim Theatre in London — home to Les Miserables — has been forced to delay its lunchtime opening event after it's been reported that Stephen Sondheim, 89, fell in his Connecticut home, leaving him "temporarily incapacitated."
