Following the closing earlier this year of West End fan-favourite Bat Out of Hell, it appears the Dominion Theatre has finally found its next 'big' musical to take over its stage. It has just been officially announced that Big The Musical will be making its long-awaited London premiere following two years of sitting in production limbo. Jay McGuiness, best known for being one-fifth of the British-Irish boyband, The Wanted, is set to reprise his role as Josh Baskin from the smash-hit runs in Plymouth and Dublin.
Big The Musical tickets for the West End Dominion Theatre premiere are on sale now as of Tuesday, 2 April 2019.
Big The Musical's highly anticipated West End premiere
It's been two years since Big The Musical was last seen on the stage and it is set to finally open at the Dominion Theatre on 6 September 2019 for a strictly limited, nine-week season lasting until 2 November 2019.
Your universe will never be the same as Jay McGuiness takes to the stage once more to play 12-year-old Josh Baskin, a role first made famous by Tom Hanks in the classic 1988 film, Big, and later originated by McGuiness at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in 2016.
Everything you need to know about Jay McGuiness and his career
Jay McGuiness rose to fame as part of The Wanted, but he became a household name when he won the 2015 series of Strictly Come Dancing alongside Aliona Vilani, professional dancer and McGuiness's partner on the show. The singer and actor has remained quite busy since Big The Musical closed at the Dublin BGE Theatre in early January 2017. Last year, McGuiness and his fellow Wanted bandmate, Siva Kaneswaran, won last year's celebrity version of Hunted on Channel 4, raising money for the charitable programme, Stand Up For Cancer. In addition to being a frequent contributor to The One Show on BBC, McGuiness is also currently tearing up the West End stage in Rip It Up - The 60s, which is playing at the Garrick Theatre until 2 June 2019.
Big The Musical creatives for the West End premiere
The heartwarming musical was adapted from the 1988 film by John Weidman, who wrote the book, and Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire, who created the incredible score that will have you blown away. Further creatives along with the full West End cast are expected to be announced in the coming months.
Synopsis for Big The Musical
The plot for this big-hearted musical is taken directly from the 1988 Tom Hanks film. It tells the story of Josh Baskin, a boy in his pre-teens who is tired of his boring life as a kid: you can't drink, you can't smoke, you can't drive. Where's the fun in that? One fateful evening whilst at the carnival, Josh comes across a Zoltar machine. He pops in a coin and makes a wish to be 'big'. When the creepy-looking fortune teller grants Josh's wish, he notices that the machine was unplugged the entire time. Scared, Josh runs home and goes straight to bed, only to wake up the next day as a thirty-year-old man! Pretty soon, he realises he must find a job and a girlfriend, but with all these responsibilities, maybe being an adult isn't at all that it's cracked up to be...
The family-friendly musical, Big, warns about being careful of what you wish for while remaining fun, jolly and filled with all the those good feels one needs in their life!
